A quick introduction from yourself:
My name is Andrew Whittle and I am the new Production Manager for QK Honeycomb site in Brigg.
Rundown of your career history:
I have worked within new product development for the last 15 years. Initially developing products for the construction industry, I worked more recently within the leisure industry and used to work for a customer of QK. I have been interested in getting more involved in operations management so the move to QK was a great fit.
What is the best part of your job?
I live in Brigg, so being able to walk to work is fantastic and has really helped with my work/life balance. My main reason for taking this role was that I believe I can make a difference; improving production efficiency delivering cost savings, plus I can use my industry knowledge to help develop new products.
What is the most challenging part of your job?
This is a busy site and a lot of orders go out of the door every day. It is my responsibility to make sure everything we produce is manufactured to the highest possible standards and orders are dispatched on time and in full. I am trying to make time to get to know all the new names and faces whilst also ensuring a seamless flow of production.
What has been the biggest change you have seen in the company?
I have only been here less than a month, but we are looking at a lot of change in the near future which is very exciting! I have seen some possible areas for even greater efficiency in our workflow and look forward to delivering some changes. We are currently working on next-generation development projects for our clients which will allow us to introduce new technologies into our product offering.
What do you fill your spare time with?
I have a wife and four children, so I spend most of my time with my family. Myself and my wife have always encouraged our kids to be active as much as possible. We do a lot of cycling, walks and other outdoor activities, our family favourite at the moment is geocaching which is great fun.
What would people at work be surprised to find out about you?
I think that most people here are surprised to find out that I did used to work for one of QK’s customers!
What motto or habit do you live by?
With my kids, I try to teach them to enjoy life and to be honest as they are character traits which I have always held in high regard. I also encourage my kids to get as many new experiences as possible and to try new ways of doing things. I lead by example on this and always push myself to try new things.
Words of advice for the younger generation looking to get into engineering?
Expose yourself to as many different experiences as you can, the best way to do this is to work in different areas of engineering. Research what you want to do and get the right kind of qualifications and experience to match this goal.
